PunterPolls Prediction – Match 49: Mumbai Indians v Chennai Super Kings at Mumbai, 5 May

Mumbai caught in mid-table scrap | PunterPolls Prediction

A team that hasn't lost a single home game this season takes on another that's yet to lose an away fixture. Either way, on Sunday, one team's sequence will be broken. Mumbai Indians are back at Wankhede Stadium where they have won all their four games, described as a "fortress" by their captain, Rohit Sharma. After three consecutive victories - during which their batsmen posted scores of above 160 - their batting suffered a rare meltdown against Sunrisers Hyderabad, managing an underwhelming 129 in a heavy defeat. Mumbai have been displaced from the top four following Sunrisers' win against Delhi Daredevils on Saturday and will look to regain lost ground. Close on their heels is fourth-placed Rajasthan Royals, who also have 12 points, and play later on the evening.

Super Kings are all but through to the playoffs, with nine wins from 11 games. Against Kings XI Punjab, they showed they could recover quickly from a rare MS Dhoni failure, courtesy Suresh Raina's first IPL century that took them to an imposing 186. Though they won by a comfortable 15 runs, the contest was a lot closer than that margin suggested. An area they need to address going forward is the bowling. In their last five games, their bowlers have conceded scores of 185, 186 and 171. Their batting, though, has been consistent and potent. They could be a change at the top of the order, with M Vijay likely to return for Wriddhiman Saha, who was carrying an injury on the eve of the game.

PunterPolls Prediction

Chennai Super Kings on a winning streak will take on Mumbai Indians today. Its been long time since CSK lost any game and its really been very difficult to figure out the weaknesses of this team. This team doesn't have any issues playing home or away. They play simple cricket, when they required 16-20 runs in last overs they done it but when other team against them required such as score against them they restrict them.

As far as Mumbai Indians are concern, batting is their strength. In bowling department they have to work a bit but its not that bad. MI have very good record at their home ground. They haven't lost a single game here and would like to continue it. MI also have won their first game against CSK at Chennai.

Its been very difficult to predict the winner at this stage, both teams are equally good. We will be more confident after an inning, but to keep stats in mind, our experts decided that Mumbai Indians should win this game.

  1. So as per now… Mumbai indians are on the upper edge… Any advantage of chasing or defending??? I mean how good r both teams defending or chasing???

    • Very good question.

MI only have an edge that they are playing at their home ground and havn’t lost a single game yet. Mentally it does matter a lot, Look at Royals, their playing below par when they play away.

Your second question, chasing or defending thing. I think it does matter a bit especially when you are chasing 175+. Below then that, I think should be chase able.

Capabilities of chasing a target –
According to me CSK can easily chase target upto 175-180. As far MI is concern, its always hard to chase above 160.

Capabilities of defending a target –
MI does have bowlers to defend the target of 170, but lot much depends upon captaincy

CSK’s bowling department is bit weaker as compare to MI, But captain is sensible. If they score 155+. They can put any team in pressure.

  2. Acording to pitch and conditions what will be easier for both the team batting first or bowling first . can both the team defend the score or can chase them..

  3. MI have posted 139 on board and if you look at the way they have played you will find actually the run been scored in less than 11 overs. As they have played 9 overs as dot balls.

So the pitch is not that bad and CSK does have strength to chase the target.

Seems like easy target for CSK. But our experts believe this shouldn’t be the case. We are expecting some fight back in this decent total.

    Last result…should be CSK.
