IPL 2014: Elimintaor: Chennai Super Kings v Mumbai Indians, May 28, 2014

Match Preview

Eliminator - the second of the four Playoff matches of Pepsi IPL 2014 will see a contest between the teams who finished third and fourth in the standings. Two-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings, who finished third with nine wins in the league stage, will be pitted against the defending champions, Mumbai Indians, who scraped past the Rajasthan Royals in the final league match of the season.

Post qualifying for the Playoffs, the Chennai Super Kings suffered a few hiccups when they lost three matches in a row. But they come into the Eliminator on the back of a convincing win over the Royal Challengers Bangalore in their final match of the league season. KKR’s stunning victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad, which resulted in them displacing CSK from the second place, must have come as somewhat of a jolt to MS Dhoni and co.

Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, must be high on adrenaline after their astonishing win over the Rajasthan Royals in the final league match of the season. Needing to score 190 in 14.3 overs to sneak into fourth place in the standings, MI accomplished the task when few gave them a chance. There were contributions all-round – from the two openers and Corey Anderson, who piloted the run-chase, to Ambati Rayudu whose cameo kept MI in the game and of course Aditya Tare, who sealed the deal with a maximum.

IPL 2014: 56th match – Mumbai Indians v Rajasthan Royals, May 25, 2014

Match Preview

Match 56 of Pepsi IPL 2014, perhaps the most crucial match of the league stage. Mumbai Indians take on Rajasthan Royals in the final league fixture of the season.

The equation is pretty straightforward. A victory for the Rajasthan Royals will mean they sail through to the Playoffs, while a convincing win for the Mumbai Indians – with a margin that will nudge their net run-rate above Rajasthan Royals’ – will catapult them into fourth place in the standings.

Mumbai Indians have faced a do-or-die situation in their last few matches. That they are still alive in the race for the fourth Playoffs spot speaks volumes about the passion, ability and hunger within the team. The defending champions defeated Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals in their last three matches – each of these wins was convincing. MI definitely head into this match as favourites.

IPL 2014: 51st match – Mumbai Indians v Delhi Daredevils, May 23, 2014

Match Preview

Match 51 of Pepsi IPL 2014 will feature the Mumbai Indians and the Delhi Daredevils.

MI, by virtue of consecutive wins against the Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab, are alive in the race to qualify for the Playoffs. In their most recent outing, at Mohali, they became the only team to get the better of KXIP in both league matches this season. Despite the back-to-back wins, the criterion remains the same for MI – they still have to win their remaining two matches and hope other results fall in place to aid their progress to the Playoffs.

Delhi Daredevils, who’ve had a largely forgettable season, will be desperate for some joy. The team has won only two of their 12 league fixtures so far and lies at the floor of the table. Since their last victory – incidentally, against the Mumbai Indians on April 27 – the team has lost seven matches in a row. In their most-recent outing, they posted 164 runs on the board, yet couldn’t defend the same as KXIP knocked off the runs in the final over.

IPL 2014: 48th match – Kings XI Punjab v Mumbai Indians, May 21, 2014

Match Preview

Kings XI Punjab, the first team to seal a place in the Playoffs, take on defending champions Mumbai Indians in Match 48 of Pepsi IPL 2014.

Kings XI Punjab will now want to win for two reasons: They say winning is a habit, and KXIP will want to develop that habit. And secondly, the team now needs to finish among the top two, so they will get a second dash at qualifying for the title clash – if the need arises.

MI’s win over the Rajasthan Royals on Monday means they are barely alive in the race for the Playoffs. With two Playoff spots still open and five teams competing for them, MI cannot afford another subpar day on the field.

Match Preview

The Rajasthan Royals play their final home match of the season when they take on the Mumbai Indians in Match 44 of Pepsi IPL 2014.

RR, with 14 points from 11 matches, have a foot in the Playoffs and a win in this contest will only firm up their position among the top four teams. IPL2014: 40th match – Kolkata Knight Riders v Mumbai Indians, May 14, 2014

Match Preview

Mumbai Indians have a lot more riding on the outcome in Cuttack, considering defeat could leave them needing to win all their remaining matches. So managing Kolkata Knight Riders' spin attack gains further priority. Sunil Narine and Co juggle between attack and defence quite well and it will fall upon the Indian batsmen to circumvent them.

Rohit Sharma has had trouble deciding whether to open or not, but with Knight Riders known spin threat in the middle overs, he might remain at No.4. Mumbai will need him and Kieron Pollard to provide acceleration late in the innings. Their other resources - Corey Anderson has not looked comfortable without pace on the ball, CM Gautam is a rookie at this level and Lendl Simmons tends to be hit or miss - do not inspire much confidence.
