IPL2014: 31st match – Royal Challengers Bangalore v Kings XI Punjab, May 9, 2014

Match Preview

With three wins in seven games, Royal Challengers Bangalore have plenty of catching up to do. After their defeat to Mumbai Indians on Tuesday, captain Virat Kohli said they needed to win at least five of their next seven to qualify for the playoffs. The good news is Royal Challengers are playing their next three games in Bangalore, where they have a strong record. The potential bad news? The weather. Rains have hit the city over the last couple of days and if the evening rain continues, there could be a truncated game.

Kings XI Punjab went back to the top of the table after blanking out Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday by posting 231. While their batsmen have hogged the attention, their coach Sanjay Bangar gave due credit to the bowlers, pointing to the number of times they had taken ten wickets. Kings XI have achieved this twice and in their last game against Royal Challengers, they claimed eight. It is hard at this point to pick holes on Kings XI. The only thing that could bring them down is complacency.

PunterPolls Prediction – Match 70: Royal Challengers Bangalore v Chennai Super Kings at Bangalore, 18 May

Mumbai Indians look to preserve dominance | PunterPolls Prediction

Royal Challengers Bangalore would have been glued to their television sets on Friday evening, following the fortunes of Sunrisers Hyderabad. They wouldn't have been feeling too good by the end of it, for Sunrisers' victory has made Royal Challengers' path to the playoffs harder. Royal Challengers are in a must-win situation against Chennai Super Kings at home on Saturday. If they achieve it, it will take them to 18 points and on par with Sunrisers. However, Sunrisers have one more game to play, on Sunday, and a win will take them to 20 and knock Royal Challengers out of the competition. Therefore, for Royal Challengers, they need to win, foremost, and then wait and watch.

For a side that was running on full steam till the start of May, it's bizarre that they find themselves in this situation. Two consecutive defeats, against Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab, has turned their quest for the playoffs into a last-minute scramble. If losing to the struggling Knight Riders was disappointing enough, the manner of their defeat to Kings XI at home - their first loss in Bangalore - would have been harder to digest. Should Royal Challengers and Sunrisers be tied on points, the former have the safety net of a superior net run rate.

Super Kings are already through to the playoffs but currently sit behind table-leaders Mumbai Indians. Both teams will play their final league games on Saturday. Having finished in the top two, Super Kings and Mumbai will face each other in the first qualifier. Stephen Fleming, the Super Kings coach, hinted at fielding a few players who haven't been given an opportunity yet, before the playoffs.

While it would have disappointed them immensely, Royal Challengers Bangalore's loss to Kolkata Knight Riders hasn't hurt their chances of qualifying for the play-offs much. They are still fourth on the points table, ahead of Sunrisers Hyderabad in terms of net run-rate and are much better placed than them.

Their last two matches are at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, where they've had an enviable record this season. There's an outside chance that Royal Challengers can qualify even if they lose their remaining two matches. But they'll be looking to secure their position in the top four as quickly as possible, with a last game against Chennai Super Kings on May 18*.

Royal Challengers' opponents tomorrow, Kings XI Punjab, still have an outside chance if they win their remaining matches but, at this stage, that seems purely academic. More importantly, they can affect Royal Challengers' chances. The last time these two teams played each other, David Miller struck a whirlwind century to stun Royal Challengers in a big chase.

Having struggled on a slow pitch, Royal Challengers will find the easy pace of the Chinnaswamy track a welcome relief. The bigger problem for the home side, however, is their struggle to shut the opposition out of the match. That defeat to Kings XI aside, Delhi Daredevils ran them close in spite of Royal Challengers having posted 183 on the board. They'll be hoping to shut out Kings XI, else there is a possibility a top four spot could prove elusive.

Must win match for Royal Challenger Banglore. Kings XI has done good while chasing the target. Pitch is good and by the time of writing this KIngs XI have won the toss and elected to field first.

Zaheer and Muralitharan is back for RCB and this is an important change while defending the target. Our experts has decided to with RCB in this important encounter.

It is likely that Chennai Super Kings will find more support in Ranchi than Kolkata Knight Riders. The last time the JSCA International Stadium Complex hosted a game, the hometown boy MS Dhoni hit the winning runs in an ODI against England in front of a packed house in a city where his popularity possibly rivals Sourav Ganguly's in Kolkata. Dhoni's IPL team, however, won't be playing in Ranchi this year. Instead, the Ranchi crowd, on paper, should be backing a side on a ventilator this season; it won't be a surprise if they end up supporting Royal Challengers Bangalore, a team with greater star power and in the running for a spot in the play-offs, or perhaps they will end up backing both.

Knight Riders won comfortably against Pune Warriors in their previous game, and Royal Challengers beat Delhi Daredevils narrowly. A win for Royal Challengers will take their tally to nine and them to No.2, though having played one game more than the rest in the top four.

Kolkata have shown good cricket in their last match against Pune and RCB have won a close encounter against the Delhi Daredevils. Thing which I want you to concentrate on is bowling department of both the teams. Kolkata Knight Riders bowling is much stronger if you compare them to RCB's bowling.

Whereas, Royals Challenger Batting does have  lot of firepower as their top order is performing good. So, KKR would like to bat first after winning the toss and RCB will like to chase. All in all, this is going to be perfect match for cricket lovers to watch for.

Though, KKR have nothing to loose and like to spoil the party for RCB, our experts believe that Royal Challenger does have better chance to win this contest.

When Royal Challengers Bangalore left the comforts of home about a fortnight ago, they had won six games out of eight, were at the top end of the points table and were considered a shoo-in for the playoffs. In the four matches since, they have lost three times. As a result, they've dropped to the crowded middle of the table and have a growing list of doubters. Delhi is the second-to-last stop on their road trip, before they head to the newest venue on the IPL map, Ranchi, and then it's back home for two games to finish the league stage. They will want to score points in their final two matches on the road, not just to shore up their chances of a playoff spot but to boost their confidence ahead of those big games, none of which will be at the Chinnaswamy.
What should worry Royal Challengers, more than their failure to win away games this season, is their response to David Miller's assault in their previous match. Arguably Miller's 38-ball hundred was one of the finest innings in an IPL chase, but Royal Challengers seemed to lose focus soon after the onslaught began, even before their total of 190 seemed to be seriously under threat. Virat Kohli dropped one, their bowlers fed him length balls regularly, AB de Villiers misfielded …They'll have to deal with many more such pressure situations going into the final stretch of the tournament, and they'll be hoping to cope a lot better than they did on Monday.

Delhi Daredevils are out of the race for the playoffs. For them, it's all about finishing a disappointing campaign on a relative high, and spoiling a few parties on the way.

Delhi Daredevils, their batsmen are not in form and their bowlers are not trustworthy and still if they managed to pull out this game, this will be miracle. According to our experts, Delhi only have a better chance if they will chasing a total witin 150 on this pitch otherwise its RCB all the way.

PunterPolls Prediction – Match 51: Kings XI Punjab v Royal Challengers Bangalore at Mohali, 6 May

RCB look to break away from mid-table jam | PunterPolls Prediction

Royal Challengers Bangalore finally scored away points, their first in five games on the road in IPL 2013, against Pune Warriors on Thursday. While the winning margin of 17 runs seemed comfortable enough in the end, Royal Challengers must have been worried as Robin Uthappa had a feisty go at the target of 188. To remove all remaining doubts, for themselves, the fans and the experts, they would have to score again in Mohali.

Apart from the psychological benefits of consecutive away victories, it's imperative that they win to allow themselves a bit of a cushion on the points table. Royal Challengers currently sit at No. 2 with 14 points from 11 games. But Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals all have the same numbers too. With five games to go in the group stages, Royal Challengers will want to break away from the pack without much delay.

Kings XI Punjab sit just outside of that mid-table cluster, with eight points from 10 games. With nine wins being the number widely agreed upon as the number required to stand a serious chance of making the playoffs, they must win five of their remaining six matches. While Royal Challengers - with the likes of Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli all having delivered at different times in this tournament - might seem like a daunting challenge for the relatively low-profile Kings XI, they can take heart from their previous two showings. After almost pulling off a giant-killing in Mumbai, they were spirited in their chase of 187 at Chepauk. Now, back at home in Mohali, they will be hoping to finally close out a game. Time is running out for them, and they can't afford any more almost-theres.PunterPolls Prediction

Once again like to remind all that our predictions are based upon previous stats and we personally feel about the game before the match actually begins. We are not tipsters or predictors who commits anywhere like other people does social networking sites such as Facebook.

Kings XI Punjab v Royal Challenger Banglore, Kings XI have lost couple of close games while chasing the big target and everyone does have a hope that they will be able to pull this time. But everyone is ignoring most important factor that Mohali ground and pitch is more or less similar to the Banglore. Ground is small and pitch is super good for batsmen.

We are expecting big inning from Gayle or Kohli today. But again we have seen the Chennai v Mumbai match yesterday where pitch has dramatically behaved as compare to previous matches. Reason behind, we generally ignores while watching the match that every ground has at least 6 pitches and we don't know on which pitch the match is being played. So, today might be different track.

Our experts believe that chasing on this track shouldn't be that difficult for any teams as both teams does have some good finisher players. But if we need to ask to pick one team we would like to go with Royal Challenger Banglore.
